02 / A POSSIBLE CONTEXT

What might the question have been?

Should troops be mobilized, who should command them, and how should losses and rewards be handled?

A possible setting

A polity or estate prepares for war. It must choose a commander, enforce discipline, and anticipate casualties, withdrawal, and the distribution of land and offices. The seasoned elder can be read as an experienced commander.

How the words respond

The judgment favors an experienced leader. The opening line demands discipline. Later lines mention carts of corpses and the consequences of putting the wrong person in charge. The final line turns to grants and appointments after a campaign.

READING THREAD

Troops, discipline, corpse carts, withdrawal, and rewards make this a particularly concrete set of military determinations.

This scenario adapts the Chinese edition's historical reading. It is a possible reconstruction, not an established single event or the only interpretation.
