明夷：利艱貞。
Ming Yi: Favorable to determine in hardship.
初九：明夷于飛，垂其翼。君子于行，三日不食，有攸往，主人有言。
Nine at the beginning: Brightness wounded in flight, its wings hanging down. The noble person travels, eating nothing for three days. There is somewhere to go; the host has words of criticism.
六二：明夷，夷于左股，用拯馬壯，吉。
Six in the second place: Brightness wounded; injury in the left thigh. Rescue with a strong horse. Auspicious.
九三：明夷于南狩，得其大首，不可疾貞。
Nine in the third place: Brightness wounded on a southern hunt. Capturing the great chief. Do not press the determination hastily.
六四：入于左腹，獲明夷之心，于出門庭。
Six in the fourth place: Entering the left belly, obtaining the heart of wounded brightness, then going out through the gate and courtyard.
六五：箕子之明夷，利貞。
Six in the fifth place: Jizi's wounded brightness. A favorable determination.
上六：不明晦，初登于天，后入于地。
Six at the top: Not brightness but darkness. First climbing to Heaven; afterward entering the earth.
02 / A POSSIBLE CONTEXT
What might the question have been?
How can someone survive military defeat, persecution, or injury and preserve a place in the world?
A possible setting
A flying creature droops its wings; a fugitive is wounded in the thigh; Jizi endures obscurity. Another image rises to Heaven and then falls to Earth. The title and some images admit competing readings.
How the words respond
The opening traveler goes hungry and faces criticism. A strong horse rescues the wounded person in the second line. The third catches a great chief but warns against haste. Later lines describe leaving a household, Jizi's adversity, and a fall from height.
Wounding, flight, concealment, and downfall suggest memories of defeat and survival rather than a single established historical episode.
This scenario adapts the Chinese edition's historical reading. It is a possible reconstruction, not an established single event or the only interpretation.
