02 / A POSSIBLE CONTEXT

What might the question have been?

When resources are scarce, how far may offerings, obligations, or support for others be reduced?

A possible setting

A household or estate must economize but worries about presenting too little at a rite. The judgment asks what should be used and accepts two vessels of food.

How the words respond

Assistance should be prompt but measured. Another line says to benefit without diminishing. Three travelers lose one, while a lone traveler gains a companion. Later lines bring valuable tortoises and a dependent. Loss and gain are assessed in relation to others.

READING THREAD

The modest offering is explicit; the other lines explore reductions in resources, people, illness, and obligations.

This scenario adapts the Chinese edition's historical reading. It is a possible reconstruction, not an established single event or the only interpretation.
