HEXAGRAM 62 / LOWER CANON

小過 Xiǎo Guò

Small Exceeding

Keeping an undertaking small · Small actions beyond the ordinary

01 / THE EARLY TEXT

The words themselves.

An interpretive English translation. Read the translation notes. Six and nine name line types; positions run from bottom to top.

Xiao Guo: Success. A favorable determination. Small matters may be undertaken; great matters may not. A flying bird leaves its call. Upward is unfitting; downward is fitting. Great good fortune.

Six at the beginning: A flying bird brings misfortune.

Six in the second place: Passing the grandfather, meeting the grandmother; not reaching the ruler, meeting the retainer. No blame.

Nine in the third place: Not taking extra precautions. Someone follows and injures the person. Inauspicious.

Nine in the fourth place: No blame. Not passing beyond, but meeting. Going is dangerous: be alert. Do not use a lasting determination.

Six in the fifth place: Dense clouds, no rain, from our western outskirts. The lord shoots with a tethered arrow and takes what is in the cave.

Six at the top: Not meeting, but passing beyond. The flying bird goes away. Inauspicious. This is called disaster and calamity.

02 / A POSSIBLE CONTEXT

What might the question have been?

Is a small journey, hunt, or intervention possible, and what happens if it grows too large?

A possible setting

A flying bird leaves its call. The judgment favors downward over upward movement. Ancestors, an encounter with a retainer, and a shot at something in a cave provide specific examples.

How the words respond

Small matters are permitted; great ones are not. The lines distinguish modest encounters from insufficient defense, dangerous advance, and a bird flying beyond the meeting point. The western clouds reappear without rain.

READING THREAD

Scale and direction are explicit constraints. Exceeding a small limit may be possible where a major undertaking is not.

This scenario adapts the Chinese edition's historical reading. It is a possible reconstruction, not an established single event or the only interpretation.
